Mercedes will create its own operating system and autopilot and will invest hundreds of millions of euros in this business
The corporation intends to develop the MB.OS operating system
Information is circulating online about the latest plans of the German automaker Mercedes-Benz Group. As it became known, the company intends to open its own software development center.
At the moment, the project budget is 200 million (US$217 million) euros. At the same time, as part of the new enterprise, the corporation intends to develop the MB.OS operating system. Mercedes-Benz engineers and developers are working on features ranging from in-car entertainment to autonomous driving.
Mercedes representatives have already said that the new division has every chance of becoming a leader in the market for electric vehicles and specialized software. Moreover, they expressed the opinion that it is the new enterprise that will take on the role of the “epicenter” of research and
“We take responsibility for software architecture and integration – this is our main goal,” said Chief Software Officer Magnus Ostberg at the roundtable. “We don’t do everything ourselves – we value partnerships, but of course we do the parts that are most important to us.”
One such partnership is with computer graphics specialist Nvidia, with whom Mercedes struck a deal in 2020 to develop assistive and self-driving features that will be part of the MB.OS system that will launch in 2024.
The center will be called Electric Software Hub (ESH). Its opening is planned at the area of the Mercedes Technology Center complex in the city of Sindelfingen in Germany.
